 Financial/Business Acumen

~ facilitated by Gerard Forbes, Dynamo, LLC

We will run through a brief introduction to financial metrics, focused on the 3 main financial reports – balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow.  The review of these will be high level and will focus on understanding the information they contain and any vocabulary/acronyms related to each.

Second, we will discuss where your organization is at from a data maturity stand point.  Some businesses are working to effectively organize the data they have to make better decisions, while others have mature data analysis departments processing massive amounts of structured and un-structured data.  Knowing this allows the individual to understand what behaviors and outcomes can be accurately measured.

Third, we’ll discuss leading and lagging indicators and how they relate to key performance indicators (KPIs).  In an OD role, one is not always in a position to challenge a defined metric; however, it is possible to critically examine what behaviors (intended & unintended) the metric will drive based on how it is measured and incentivized.

Finally, we will wrap up by taking a look at a root cause analysis and how it can be applied to metrics to better understand business performance - ultimately leading to better decision making.

As outcomes of this training, you will have the:

  • Confidence discussing financial performance
  • Knowledge of basic definitions of financial reporting
  • Ability to evaluate the maturity of their companies data maturity level
  • Ability to critically examine how performance measures impact behavio
  • Confidence evaluate how the support provided by OD drives business outcomes
